CALASMOKE is an exclusive wood floor design technique created and mastered by Calabrese Hardwood in Colorado. It’s based on Lichtenberg wood burning, a process that uses high-voltage electricity and conductive solutions to burn intricate, lightning-like patterns into wood.
This technique creates bold, one-of-a-kind floor planks that add serious artistic impact to residential and commercial interiors. Every Calasmoke floor is created by certified Calasmoke artist, Mike Wong, who is trained in the technical process of electro-burn design.
Also known as “electro-burning” or “wood fractal burning,” this method involves applying a conductive solution (such as saltwater or baking soda and water) to wood. Then, a controlled high-voltage current is passed through the surface, creating organic, branch-like burn patterns that mimic natural lightning strikes or tree roots. These patterns can be randomly generated or lightly guided, depending on the artist’s approach and the type of solvent used. Once burned, the wood is cleaned, sealed, and finished to protect the design and enhance its natural tones.
