White Oak Hardwood Floor Installation In Longmont, Colorado

When homeowners start looking for new hardwood floors, they're usually after more than just new floors. They want something that feels permanent... something that fits the home instead of fighting it. This project is a perfect example of how the right material, layout, and finish can completely reset a space.

We installed white oak across all three levels of this Longmont home, including the lower level, main floor, upper level, and a full custom stair and railing system. Every detail was planned so the house feels cohesive from the moment you walk in. The result is a floor that feels intentional, balanced, and built to last.

Why White Oak

White oak is one of the best choices for hardwood flooring in Colorado. It handles seasonal movement well, holds up over time, and works with a wide range of styles. For this home, it checked every box. The grain is strong and clean without overwhelming the space. It pairs naturally with brick fireplaces, modern kitchens, black metal accents, and white trim—, just as comfortable in a contemporary home as a traditional one. Most importantly, white oak ages well. This floor will look better in ten years than it does today.

Rift And Quartered Mix

We used a blend of rift sawn and quarter sawn boards, and that was intentional. Rift sawn white oak gives you straight, consistent grain, it feels clean and controlled, especially in open spaces. Quarter sawn introduces subtle ray fleck and natural movement while adding dimensional stability, which matters in Colorado's dry climate. By mixing the two, the floor avoids looking flat or overly uniform. It has structure, but it still feels alive.

Common And Character Grade

A lot of homeowners hear "character grade" and assume it means rustic. That's not the case when it's selected and installed correctly. Character grade adds natural knots, mineral streaks, color variation, and organic grain movement. These are things that prevent the floor from feeling sterile. The boards feel real, not manufactured. When laid with intention, character grade looks custom and high-end, not busy. We balanced the mix carefully so no area feels chaotic or patchy.

Custom Herringbone On The Main Level

This project wasn't limited to straight plank runs. The main level features a custom herringbone design framed with contrasting borders, which defines the kitchen area without needing rugs or visual clutter.

The herringbone pattern adds movement and structure. It draws attention toward the island and anchors the room naturally. The framed border is what elevates it, clean lines, consistent spacing, and precise alignment are critical with herringbone. There's no room for shortcuts.

Three Levels, One Cohesive Floor

One of the biggest challenges in a full-home project is maintaining continuity across multiple levels. This home has a finished lower level, a feature-rich main level, and a calm, clean upper level. The same white oak runs throughout, but we adjusted the layout and board selection slightly by level to suit each space.

The lower level feels warm and grounded, especially around the brick fireplace. The natural grain variation works with the masonry instead of competing with it. The main level carries the design weight, with wide planks that keep the space open while borders and feature work add definition. Everything ties into the cabinetry, countertops, and natural light. Upstairs is quieter by design. The rift and quartered mix creates a smoother visual flow, which works well for bedrooms and hallways. Calm, not boring.

Staircase And Custom Railing

Stairs are often where hardwood projects fall apart visually. If the stairs don't match the floor, the whole home feels disjointed. For this project, the stairs and railing were treated as part of the flooring system—not an add-on.

The treads and landings were color matched to the flooring with clean nosing, tight joints, and balanced board selection. The stairs feel intentional and consistent with the rest of the home. The railing and posts were finished to complement the white oak and paired with dark metal balusters, repeating the same design language used in the floors. Warm wood, controlled contrast. Everything belongs.

Hardwax Oil Finish

This floor was finished with a custom-mixed hardwax oil, which is a big reason it looks the way it does. Hardwax oil penetrates the wood instead of sitting on top of it. You see the grain, not a thick coating. The result is a natural matte-to-satin appearance with clear grain definition, easier spot repairs down the road, and no plastic look or glare. We tuned the mix to stay warm and clean without turning orange or muddy.

What You Don't See

What's underneath matters just as much as what's on top. This project included proper wood acclimation, detailed layout planning, balanced seams and board flow, clean transitions at every threshold, consistent finish, and tight detail work around cabinets and corners. The amount of detail that went into this job is what separates Calabrese Hardwood Flooring from the rest. You would have thought this was our dream home but we take immense pride knowing we were did our part for someone else. This was and will always be Michael Wong's, owner of Calabrese Hardwood, favorite projects he's ever done. White oak hardwood floor install white oak installed hardwood floor in longmont 7
