Frequently Asked Questions About Hardwood Flooring

Choosing new floors or refinishing existing ones comes with a lot of questions and we’re here to answer them. Below you’ll find detailed, honest responses to the most common questions we get about hardwood flooring installation, dustless sanding, refinishing timelines, staying in your home during work, floor care, and more.

We’ve served homeowners across Firestone, Longmont, Boulder, Denver, and Northern Colorado for over 20 years and we know how important it is to feel confident about your flooring decisions. If you’re mid-renovation or just getting started, these FAQs will help you understand what to expect and how to get the best results.

Calabrese Hardwood is based in Firestone, and we proudly serve the majority of Northern Colorado. This includes Longmont, Boulder, Denver, Erie, Frederick, Mead, Windsor, Thornton, Westminster, and nearby communities. In fact, if you live along the Front Range, we can likely service your home or business. Don’t hesitate to call us – we offer free estimates throughout our service area. (See our Service Area page for details.)

Timelines vary by project size and scope. A small room (150–200 sq. ft.) might take 1-2 days to install or refinish. A whole-house project (~2,000 sq. ft.) could take 1-2 weeks or more, depending on complexity (custom patterns, multi-level homes, etc.). Refinishing is often quicker than a full installation. After the initial consultation, we’ll provide you with an estimated schedule tailored to your project. We work efficiently so you can enjoy your new floors as soon as possible!

It depends on wear and usage. In a busy household, floors may need refinishing every 7-10 years. With lighter traffic, you might go even longer. Signs it’s time include deep scratches, dull or worn spots, or fading. The good news is that refinishing can make hardwood floors last for generations. We’ll assess your floor’s condition and recommend the best time to refinish when we visit.

No, we believe in 100% pricing transparency. Your quote includes materials, labor, and estimated project time, and we only charge for additional work or modifications if approved by you.

Yes, we require a deposit of 30% to 50% before starting work. This deposit secures your materials, labor, and design planning. The remaining balance is due according to the agreed payment structure.

Absolutely! We provide free, no-obligation in-home estimates. We’ll visit your property, measure the area, and discuss material and labor costs. You’ll get transparent pricing – we break down the cost of materials (woods, finishes) and labor. No pushy sales tactics, just honest advice on the options that fit your budget and needs.

We install both solid hardwood (3/4” thick planks) and engineered hardwood (layered construction for stability). We carry all major species: oak, maple, hickory, cherry, walnut, Brazilian cherry (Jatoba), bamboo, and more. We also offer specialty floors like hand-scraped, distressed, or reclaimed wood. Each species comes in various widths and finishes. For moisture-prone areas (like basements or kitchens), we often recommend engineered hardwood because it resists warping. We’re happy to discuss the pros and cons of each type during your free consultation.

Dustless sanding means we use advanced machines with HEPA-filter vacuums that capture nearly all the dust as we sand your floors. In a typical refinishing job, this equipment removes over 99% of the airborne dust that a regular sander would create. The benefit is a cleaner, healthier home during the project. You’ll find very little cleanup afterwards, and your family (and air quality) won’t be filled with fine wood dust. Our clients love that we leave their homes tidy.

Simple regular care keeps your floors looking their best. Sweep or vacuum often to remove grit. Clean with a damp (not soaking wet) mop and a gentle wood floor cleaner – never use harsh chemicals or leave standing water. We recommend using cleaning products approved for hardwood. You can also use area rugs in high-traffic zones and felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches. Avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or moisture. With these practices, your new floors should stay beautiful for years to come!

Yes! We offer a 12-month workmanship guarantee on all custom projects. If there are any defects in craftsmanship within this period, we will repair or replace it at no additional cost.
